MODA'S BLOG TAKEOVER - CRYSTAL BALL FLASHFORWARD

Hi!  My name is Kathy, Kathryn when I'm in trouble.  I'm 12 years old and it's 1972.  I've been trying to see my future in a crystal ball and today I finally made it!  I see 2015!  I have MEN as sons!  MEN with facial hair!  I have a husband (giggle).  Things are looking good for me!  And what about my dream of being an illustrator and writing books like Murvery's Pet Shop....

Rough draft Murvery's Pet Shop - circa 1972
Or The Cat and Mrs. Cary "retold in picures by Kathy"

Excerpts from The Cat and Mrs. Cary

The picture is getting clearer.....yes...I see lots of pencils and Sharpies.....and ......and..... dishes and laundry?  What?  And what about those boxes and boxes of fabric and patterns?  Oh!  Look at that sewing machine!  It's nothing like Mom's sweet black Singer or Grandma's treadle.  I wonder if my grown up me still has the quilt I made years ago when I was 10?

I see lots of drawing and painting stuff....and they're all MINE! No sharing with Bonnie!  Speaking of Bonnie... I just finished these family portraits. Want to see?
Family portrait 1972
It looks like when I'm an o-o-o-l-l-l-l-d-d-d-d lady I'll get to draw and paint and embroider all day if I want to!   I get to create fun stuff all day long! Like these.....
Friendship KS-1512 - one of 8 printed fabric patterns

Spring has Sprung KS-1509 - one of four seasonal patterns
Look at all of this cool fabric -
Oh my gosh!  I think that's my married name right there on the selvage!  Schmitz?!  Hey I picked strawberries this summer with a boy named Steve Schmitz..... he was so cute!  You don't suppose.....
Sturbridge - delivers to shops in July 2015

I see lots of quilts too.  It looks like the 4-H sewing paid off!

A wonderful blog take over. Wouldn't we all get a laugh if we went back to age 12 and thought about what we thought was ahead of us in life.

You crazy design folk (and families!)never cease to amaze me with your creative wit and humor. If our ease in life was how you all make it seem....from sewing to creating, to your creative wit in writing.... Life would be, well, relaxing days with our stash on a spring lawn of green, kicking back with our loved one about. Thanks for your words! :)

It is so fun to see that your dreams came true!
I love this picture of the cat on the quilts. I went back and forth with this one and the house with the alphabet for my phone cover. The house won this time ;-)
That tea cup on the armchair was also a contender. I love having your art on my phone!

I love it! Your cat on the quilts is so cute :0) As a quilter who sews with a group of ladies at a co-op building and who teach summer sewing for the 4-H ers it provides affirmation to know you give a nod to learning with a summer 4-H class. Thanks, Sarah

What a clever blog take over! I know I had no idea what I would be doing when I was 12. Knew I loved animals, books and math. Well have lots of pets and was an accountant for a time before I became a Media Specialist...so I guess our likes do become what we are and will be.

Ahhh...shades of the sixth grade. I wrote about the purple people eater. Funny the things we remember, even after so many years. If I happen to win your water color painting I have the feeling my daughter would "confinscate" it as she says. Since she'll be graduating from college on Sunday the 3rd that would be all right I guess. She loves cats and has worked hard the past four years. Maybe it would inspire her to get back to piecing, now that she won't have to be studying and practicing all the time, instead of just stitching, which was always her portable craft to have on hand. I think I'll cross my fingers for both winning and future quilting projects.

Interesting take on takeovers. Sometimes I wish my 12-year old self could take over my life. Or even better, we could share. Her view of the world combined with my experience of the world should take us far!

Beautiful quilts. Beautiful painting. How did you get so much detail in something so small?

Oh I have just found your blog, and I love it!

Two comments. Looking at the kitty-on-quilts painting, I sort of was scrolling past quick, till I saw a kitty sleeping on a stack of quilts. I thought "Aw how cute...i love cats. But-- how did she make those quilts look painted-on? Oh, she painted the stitches right on the quilts, how clever!" It took a moment to realize the whole thing is a painting!

Also I thought I'd die when I saw a flash from my past in one of your drawings, A POLE LAMP!! My mom dragged one from Tucson to Tacoma to SoCal to Bay Area. Eventually it just wasn't there. I think I always thought it was ugly, but the 'rents must've thought it was pretty snazzy. Probably worth a fortune on ebay.

I'll be checking back in, your blog is very creative and fun to read.
